FROM THE BALM OF FIERABRAS TO EMOTIONAL EDUCATION: EVIDENCE-BASED EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION

Emotional intelligence (EI) has become a psychological construct that has gained special interest in recent years. Mayer and Salovey (1997) defined EI as a set of four capacities related to the emotion: perceiving, using, understanding and managing emotions. Others authors stated out that EI can be conceived as a constellation of personality traits related to emotion (Petrides & Furnham, 2000). This theoretical debate led to two main streams of research: EI as capacity; and EI as a personality trait. In this sense, there are some meta-analysis that indicate the relevance of EI in different areas such as health (Martins, Ramalho & Morin, 2010; Schutte, Malouff, Thorsteinsson, Bhullar, & Rooke, 2007), subjective wellbeing (Sánchez-Álvarez, Extremera, & Berrocal, 2016), academic performance (Perera & DiGiacomo, 2013) and work performance (Joseph, Jin, Newman, & O'Boyle, 2015). These findings emphasizes the importance of EI in different areas of life. EI interventions have proliferated in diverse contexts (educational, clinical and organizational). These interventions have presented promising results; however, more evaluative research is needed to enrich the evidence of their positive impact on different populations (Schutte, Malouff, & Thorsteinsson, 2013). The present symposium aims to provide more efficacy studies of EI interventions in the educational context. Firstly, the VERA Program and its effects on the levels of emotional competence of primary school students will be presented. Secondly, the effects of the mindfulness program "Mindkinder" on the psychosocial adjustment of children's education students will be explained. Third, "DEL REVÉS" or "INSIDE OUT", an emotional intelligence program to improve coexistence and prevent BULLYING dynamics in primary school students will be discussed. Finally, the effects of the “Dulcinea” program for emotional education on socio and school adaptation of secondary education students will be presented.
