MAITE LARRUCEA IRURETAGOYENA

UNIVERSITY OF DEUSTO. SPAIN

Pre-doctoral researcher at the Deusto Stress Research team, where vulnerability and resilience factors are studied in the face of different stress situations and circumstances that arise in childhood and adolescence.

Maite’s work focuses on the bidirectional relationships between psychological symptoms presented by parental figures and those reported by preadolescents. Additionally, the researcher emphasizes the role of mindful parenting, attachment, and parental self-compassion in these bidirectional relationships.

Mindfulness and self-compassion as allies in the face of childhood and adolescent difficulties and parenting.

In recent years, the study of mindfulness and self-compassion within the family system has gained prominence and generated interest within the scientific community. Numerous research studies have concluded that parental mindfulness or self-compassion can be great allies in protecting and improving family well-being. Therefore, this symposium will summarize four scenarios in which mindfulness and self-compassion drive different studies to evaluate and understand problems within the family system and the difficulties of its members. The first study will evaluate the effect of mindful parenting profiles in families on different variables related to family well-being. In the second study, preliminary results of the NeuroMind study will be summarized, where mindfulness is combined with cognitive training in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). With the third study, we will advance to the adolescent stage and present a study focused on parental dynamics, emotional regulation, and their relationship with emotional eating. Finally, the fourth study will summarize and explore the relationship between mindful parenting and self-compassion within the family system.
