The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children: Research, Implementation, and Future Directions in Portugal

The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children (UP-C) is a cognitive-behavioral intervention designed to simultaneously address multiple emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depressive disorders, using a unified and transdiagnostic therapeutic approach. Targeting shared underlying mechanisms common to these disorders, the UP-C applies a set of strategies like exposure and mindfulness. Adapted from the adult version, the UP-C is tailored for children aged 7-13, offering a structured, interactive, and engaging group format that includes parental involvement.

This symposium will present ongoing research and some of the principal findings from the projects of the Portuguese UP-C research team. Ana Góis, will address the feasibility and acceptability of a Stepped-Care UP-C adaptation in Portugal, focusing on children’s primary outcomes (anxiety and depression symptoms and symptomatology interference in children’s and parents’ lives) and secondary outcomes (e.g., Children’s difficulties in Expressing Emotions, Anxiety Sensitivity, Cognitive Errors, and Behavioral Avoidance).
