Promoting mental health in childhood and adolescence: A Multidisciplinary Approach

This symposium addresses individual and contextual factors for the prevention of risk behaviors and the promotion of mental health, highlighting the role of emotional regulation.

The first presentation, “Emotional Regulation in Sports: Influence on Athletes’ Mental Health,” emphasizes the importance of emotional regulation in the mental health of athletes and suggests that prevention programs should focus on strengthening emotional regulation skills.

The second presentation, “Adversities During Childhood and Psychopathology: The Mediating Role of Emotional Regulation,” examines the role of emotional regulation in the relationship between exposure to childhood adversities and child psychopathological symptoms. The findings reinforce the importance of emotional regulation as a transdiagnostic variable to consider in the prevention of psychopathological problems.

The third presentation, “Risk Factors for Substance Use in Adolescents: A Prevention Analysis,” explores risk factors for substance use in adolescents and suggests that the perception of easy access to substances is a predictive variable for use.

The fourth presentation, “Exploring the Effectiveness of a School Drug Prevention Program: Tú Decides 2.0,” evaluates the effectiveness of a school prevention program and shows that it reduces alcohol and e-cigarette use among participants aged 14-15.

In summary, this symposium presents a multidisciplinary view of prevention and emotional regulation in youth mental health, highlighting the importance of emotional regulation in preventing psychopathological problems and substance use.
