Pornography and mental health in adolescence

Pornography is becoming increasingly common in adolescence. Close to 80% of girls and 97% of boys have accessed pornography during adolescence. The vast majority of them do so through smartphones (91%). This early and unlimited access has various consequences on adolescents’ mental health and their affective sexual development. Recent studies associate pornography consumption with increased violence, gender stereotypes, problems in sexual relationships, and emotional state alterations. Additionally, neurobiological and neuropsychological changes are observed due to frequent pornography consumption.

This session will review current data on pornography consumption in childhood and adolescence and its potential impact on different areas of a person’s life. It will also provide some tools for the prevention and treatment of this issue in clinical practice.
